It was not a planned discovery.

Walking the grounds of a château in the south of France, Valerie found herself following a gaggle of geese down a winding path — not entirely sure where they were leading, not entirely sure it mattered. In France, one learns to follow such things.

And then, around a bend — this.

The château's cottage, half-hidden in a sea of lush green. The light dancing through the canopy of trees, dappling the path, catching the warm stone of the façade. The majestic, ancient plantings pressing in from every side, alive with the particular energy of a garden that has been tended for centuries.

It stopped her completely.

This is the kind of scene that exists in the south of France in abundance — and that most people drive past without seeing. Finding it requires either luck, or the habit of following geese down unfamiliar paths, or both.

The light of that moment has been in the vault inside her head and heart ever since. The geese have long since wandered elsewhere. The cottage remains — in paint, in memory, in the collection of the person who understood immediately what it meant to turn that corner.

Some of the best things in life are found by following something that knows where it is going.
